Dental Sealants in Atlanta
What are dental sealants?
Dental sealants are a tooth-colored, restorative material applied to the deep grooves of the chewing surface of your teeth. By blocking out these deep grooves, sealants prevent food from getting stuck in the grooves. This makes the teeth less susceptible to decay. This simple and painless procedure offers the patient protection against future cavities on the chewing surfaces of their teeth. Sealants are usually indicated for children and very rarely indicated for adults.
Common questions
Do adults need sealants?
Sealants are usually indicated for children and very rarely indicated for adults. We feel it is too aggressive to recommend them for adults.
Do all kids need sealants?
No. We only recommend sealants for children who we feel are prone to cavities. If a child has never had a cavity, then a sealant is probably not necessary.
Do sealants hurt?
No, they do not.
How much do sealants cost?
Anywhere from zero dollars out of pocket to around 40-70$ per sealant based on insurance coverage.
Wondering if sealants are right for your child?
Fluoride toothpaste: good or bad?
The answer depends on age and on how prone you are to cavities. For children under 5 who cannot reliably rinse and spit, we suggest a non-fluoride toothpaste rather than having them swallow it. From roughly age 6 to 16, while the teeth are still developing, fluoride is worth using. Once you are an adult, age stops mattering and cavity history takes over: if you have never had a cavity you are probably fine without it, and if you get them often, a high concentration prescription fluoride toothpaste is worth asking about. Brushing and flossing matter far more than which tube you buy.
