What happens at a dental checkup?

The American Dental Association recommends routine dental checkups and professional cleanings every six months to maintain healthy teeth and gums. At Brookhaven Family Dentistry, our regular dental visits focus on prevention, early detection, and conservative care, so small issues don’t turn into bigger problems later.

During your first visit, we take a comprehensive approach to your oral health. This includes a full set of digital X-rays (FMX) and a thorough examination of your teeth, gums, bite, and existing dental work. These images allow our dentists to carefully evaluate areas that can’t be seen with the naked eye and address any concerns you may have, without rushing or unnecessary treatment.

For returning patients, routine checkups typically include updated X-rays as needed, a professional cleaning, and a detailed exam to ensure everything remains healthy and stable.

Two short videos from Dr. Kokabi on getting the most out of your cleaning at home: the right way to brush, and the best way to floss.

How to brush your teeth properly

Abby, one of our hygienists, recommends brushing for two minutes twice a day, and splitting your mouth into four quadrants so no area gets missed. With a soft manual brush, use small circular movements and angle the bristles toward the gum line, up on the top teeth and down on the bottom. With an electric brush, let the brush do the work and move tooth by tooth instead of scrubbing back and forth, which also stops you brushing too hard. Do not skip the inside surfaces by your tongue or the chewing surfaces.

Flossing: finding the method that works for you

There is no single correct way to clean between your teeth. String floss, floss picks, a water pick and interdental brushes all work, and the best one is the one you will actually use. With string floss or a pick, hug the floss into a C shape against the side of each tooth so it reaches under the gum. Interdental brushes come in sizes, so buy a multi pack and find the one that fits your mouth. A water pick helps most if you have braces or deeper pockets around your teeth.
