What causes a cracked tooth?

Teeth can develop cracks over time as a result of many different factors. Some of these are grinding, clenching, root canals, large fillings, and just general wear and tear. Some cracks are clearly visible, while others are hard to spot. Some cracks cause pain, while others are asymptomatic. Many times small cracks can be fixed with crowns or fillings. However, if a crack gets large over time, it may result in the tooth needing a root canal or extraction.

Does my broken tooth really need a filling?

For a broken or chipped tooth, the question that decides everything is how big the missing piece is. If a large chunk is gone, a filling will not hold and the tooth needs a crown. If a medium sized piece is missing, a filling will usually stay in place and do the job. If only a tiny corner has chipped, it often needs nothing at all, and smoothing the edge is easier and less invasive than drilling. Leaving a significant break alone has real risks: the weakened tooth can fracture further, and food packing into the nooks can start decay. A small chip with no gaps to trap food is a different matter.
