When is an extraction necessary?

Sometimes, if a tooth cannot be saved, an extraction is necessary. This is the removal of a tooth.

This video walks through what to expect in the days after a tooth is removed.

What to expect after a tooth extraction

Bite firmly on the gauze for a good 15 to 20 minutes after you leave, and expect some light oozing for an hour or two. If heavier bleeding starts later, pinch fresh gauze over the socket for about seven minutes. Stick to soft foods that are not hot, spicy or crunchy, and keep yourself hydrated. From the day after, rinse gently with warm salt water. Avoid anything that creates suction, including drinking through a straw and smoking, because it can dislodge the clot and cause a painful dry socket. Call us if swelling appears a day or two later, or if the pain suddenly worsens around day three to five.
